This Article adds two important variables to the rules"principles debate: timing and source. Unlike defined contribution plans, defined benefit plans provide a benefit based typically on time served and a predetermined proportion of either ...

The distinction between specific concrete rules and general abstract principles has engaged legal theorists for decades. East Asia"s strong focus on economic growth has necessitated a careful balancing of the benefits of financial liberalization and innovation against the very real risks inherent in financial sector development. The articulation of global principles builds on a review commissioned by the British government that suggests rates calculated by submission can be reformed. An alternative framework, which brings the management of the rate process under direct regulatory supervision, is under consideration, coordinated by the International Organization of Securities Commissions taskforce. This Article examines the sale and purchase of consumer debts (e.g., delinquent credit card debts) through the lens of a rare collection of contracts.?? It finds that in many instances, sellers disclaim all warranties about the underlying debts sold or the information transferred, sometimes as far as specifically refusing to stand by "the accuracy or completeness of any information provided." The Article argues that the collection of consumer debts sold through these transactions violates the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act"s prohibition against using deceptive or misleading representations in connection with the collection of a debt. This Article considers the historical basis for the shift from defined benefit plans to defined contribution plans, the structural and practical shortcomings of defined contribution plans, alternate pension models, and adjustments to existing retirement plan models that may offer a degree of protection to plan contributors.Like the United States, Australia is now realizing the limitations of a defined contribution retirement system insofar as it relates the provision of reliable retirement income for a population with increasing life expectancy. Most national laws provide certain measures of discriminating between foreign and domestic investors in order to give its citizens more privileges and advantages over foreign investors. However, the Asian financial crisis of 1997"1998 and the global financial crisis of 2008 highlighted the serious risks associated with financial liberalization and excessive innovation. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, in conjunction with the International Monetary Fund, convened the International Working Group of SWFs (IWG) to draft a set of generally accepted principles and practices. It evaluates whether the mechanism can be made subject to effective oversight. Windows 8.1 now up to 4.30% market share as Windows 8 falls to 6.38%

In 2013, Windows lost share every month except for March, July, and November. So far in 2014, Windows slipped a bit in January, and gained 0.12 percentage points (from 90.72 percent to 90.84 percent) in February. OS X stayed flat at 7.68 percent, while Linux lost what Windows gained (to 1.48 percent).

Net Applications uses data captured from 160 million unique visitors each month by monitoring some 40,000 websites for its clients. StatCounter is another popular service for watching market share moves; the company looks at 15 billion page views. To us, it makes more sense to keep track of users than of page views, but if you prefer the latter, the corresponding data is available here (Windows 8 is at 7.3 percent).

Meanwhile, Windows 7 slipped 0.18 percentage points (from 47.49 percent to 47.31 percent). Unlike in November, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have now done better combined than Windows 7 for three months straight, but the differences are minute.
Going back to earlier versions, Windows Vista fell 0.20 percentage points (from 3.30 percent to 3.10 percent). Windows XP meanwhile managed to regain some share after falling below the 30 percent mark at the end of 2013, increasing 0.30 percentage points (from 29.23 percent to 29.53 percent).

Windows 8.1 Hits 4.30% Market Share, Windows 8 Falls to 6.38%

Windows 8, which saw its biggest gain in August at 2.01 percentage points and its biggest loss in November at 0.87 percentage points, continues to slip. All Windows users are being encouraged to get the latest and greatest, and Microsoft is making the upgrade path to Windows 8.1 just a free download away for Windows 8 users.

With the release of Windows http://www.kwamadwala.net/safaris/elephant-back-safaris 8.1 in October, February was the fourth full month of availability for Microsoft's latest operating system version. While Windows 8.1 is certainly growing steadily and eating into Windows 8?s share, the duo only managed to end 2013 with 10 percent market share, and so far in 2014 that number has barely budged.

Web design training: the top 20 online resources | Web design | Creative Bloq

CSS-Tricks is a blog where web designer Chris Coyier walks through some of the latest CSS techniques. It's become immensely popular among professional web designers, and has recently developed a partnership with number 4 on our list, Treehouse. It's a brilliant and constantly updated source of tips, tutorials, and video lessons - all free.

The good people who work at the Opera browser created and maintain this free and comprehensive resource introducing the basics of web design and web standards. Like W3Schools, it's based around plain text and not exactly visually seductive. But the writing is lively and easy to follow, which more than makes up for that.

Through short tutorial videos, you'll learn how to take a basic WordPress blog and manipulate the CSS, HTML, and even some PHP, to match your aesthetic needs. So if you're scared off by web design terminlogy and general geekdom, but like the idea of a more casual, good-humoured approach to learning, this is a great place to begin. The site is free to use, although donations are welcomed.
To make things easier for you, we've gathered the best 20 web design training resources on the web. All have a good reputation and feature instruction and advice from web design's leading experts. Most include a range of lessons covering a range of levels, from beginner to advanced.
And finally... Stackoverflow is not in itself a place to learn web design, but it is an invaluable resource for anyone learning any web design language. Put simply, it's a question-and-answer forum where some of the brightest minds in the web design community give up their free time to help those who have got hopelessly stuck.
If you're looking to start from the beginning with the most basic lessons in HTML and CSS, the site offers a steady progression of interactive tutorials that explains everything in plain and simple language and, more importantly, lets you play with markup live on the site, so you can see what effect the tiniest changes can have on how a web page appears in the browser.

Codecademy describes itself as the 'easiest way to learn how to code' and has established a great reputation for itself within the web design community.

It's not actually a magazine (well, not in the traditional print sense of the word), but the web design blog Smashing Magazine is a fantastic resource of tutorials on all aspects of the process. The lessons are aimed at the intermediate to advanced end of the web design spectrum.

Like Treehouse, Lynda.com offers a wide range of video-based tutorials that can teach you how to design websites (as well as covering other design-related subjects) for a monthly fee. Lynda.com has been around since the dawn of the web (it launched in 1995), and also produces books, videos, and documentaries. An authoritative source of web design training videos, you can get a taster by checking out its free tutorials.
Not only does Treehouse provide great content but there's also a game element to the site that tests you on what you've learned and rewards you with achievement badges. So if you need extra motivation to learn, this is a great site to use.

So if you ever hit a wall and just can't get your head around something you're learning, or have written some code that just doesn't seem to be working, this is a great place to get help and advice from some old hands (and once you get more confident in your own skills, make sure you pay it forward and help out some newbies yourself...).
Treehouse charges a subscription for its services, but the videos are very professionally produced, and you get a wealth of lessons covering almost every aspect of web design and development.

If you want to learn to build websites, you'll probably be looking to study HTML, CSS, and JavaScript first. But if it's apps you want to build, you may be better off starting with a web application framework such as Ruby on Rails.

For just $25 a month, users gain access to all areas to the school's entire training content. But this is not just for individuals, there's also the option for businesses to enrol entire teams on training courses - an offer that the likes of IBM and NASA have already taken advantage of.
Web design can be daunting. Just the sheer amount of new techniques and acronyms appearing every day can make it seem scary and confusing, even if you're a professional web designer, let alone a beginner. But don't worry - help is at hand in the form of easy to understand, web design training resources on the web.

The site also features a social network aspect, meaning users can interact with and learn alongside friends and colleagues. And, like Treehouse, the team at Codecademy also understand the power of a badge, offering them at various key points in the training.
The site offers a host of free web design training courses, including ones in CSS, PHP, and HTML. It also features various challenges to test your skills: for example, Challenge 101 will help you create your own basic website from scratch.

01. W3Schoolsweb design training
Webdesigntuts+ offers a huge range of tutorials on a wide range of web design and web development topics for free. There's also a premium area with paid content. The site's part of the wider Tuts+ network, which includes PSD Tuts for Photoshop tutorials and WP Tuts for WordPress tutorials.
Another free online book, by the time you've read Learn Python the Hard Way you'll know the basics of coding, and be ready to move on to more challenging books.
Yes, yes, we know: there's been some criticism of the site, which has pointed out some technical errors in some of its lessons. However, for a beginner who doesn't know quite where to start with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, it still provides a very user-friendly, straighforward and free way to get going.

It's not web design training in the traditional sense, but for something completely different, check out Code Racer. Here you have to race to finish code before your enemies, use special weapons to foil their progress and win awards along the way! An interactive and fun way to learn the fundamental skills of HTML and CSS.
This free web design training resource runs through the path of building websites, games, and apps in an engaging way, easing users in gently with a very basic first lesson.

18. Why's Poignant Guide to Rubyweb design training

20. Stackoverflowweb design training
Another offbeat take on learning Ruby, Why's Poignant Guide is a free online book that takes you through learning the language using cartoons and a humorous style that's a breath of fresh air in a sometimes overly dry arena.

Don't Fear the Internet is the brainchild of freelance typographer and illustrator Jessica Hische, and is aimed at similarly creative people who have little to no desire to do web design professionally - but at the same time don't want an ugly cookie-cutter site showcasing their work.
Code School's approach is to help users learn by doing, through interactive video and coding in the browser. This web design training comes at a price but, in our opinion, it's very reasonable.

Treehouse is a video-based service, offering web design training in HTML and CSS, web development (including HTML5 and Javascript), and creating iOS apps (using Objective-C and Xcode), all wrapped up in a clear and easy-to-navigate user interface.
Australian company Sitepoint makes its money selling web design and development books, but that doesn't stop it providing some fantastic tutorials on its site for free. These tend towards the techie, but there are also some useful introductions to web design for beginners, such as this article on HTML and CSS.
03. Google Code Universityweb design training
Did you find this useful? Let us know if there are any web design training courses we've missed in the comments box below ...

Our sister print title net magazine is packed full of tutorials on all aspects of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and more, and it's shared much of its legacy content online on Creative Bloq. Most of the material here is aimed at intermediate to advanced web designers, and we'd particularly recommend the series entitled "Build a responsive site in a week" for anyone wishing to get started with responsive web design.
07. Mozilla School of Webcraftweb design training

There are many approaches to web design training - some paid, some free; some interactive, some not; some based on text, others on video. Which means it can even be an uphill struggle working out where to go and what to learn.

While many web training sites look colourful, attractive, and welcoming, with video and colourful graphics, W3Schools looks a bit flat and boring at first glance. But don't be put off!

The addition of net income attributable to noncontrolling interests means that our presentation of EBITDA, Adjusted EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDAR includes 100% of the operations of SUSP, even though our economic interest in SUSP, following its September 2012 initial public offering, is limited to our ownership of a 50.2% limited partner interest in SUSP and all SUSP's incentive distribution rights (which entitle us to an increasing percentage of distributions once SUSP distributes its minimum quarterly distribution).? We believe this presentation approach provides investors a better understanding of the performance of our core businesses over time than one which excludes a portion of the EBITDA, Adjusted EBITDA or Adjusted EBITDAR contributed by the operations of SUSP, over which we retain exclusive control.? This presentation approach is also consistent with that used for management incentive compensation targets and with the financial covenants in our outstanding borrowing agreements.? However, investors utilizing these non-GAAP measures for valuation purposes, or otherwise in making an investment decision in Susser Holdings Corporation, should take into account the 49.8% ownership of SUSP by the public when considering the contribution by SUSP to Susser Holdings Corporation's consolidated EBITDA, Adjusted EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDAR under this presentation format.

Wholesale Fuel - Susser's wholesale segment includes all of SUSP's operations plus the consignment sales and transportation business that were not contributed to SUSP in the 2012 IPO.? Wholesale fuel volumes sold to third parties - which includes all gallons except those distributed to Susser's retail stores - were up 18.2 percent from the fourth quarter of 2012 to 177.2 million gallons. Wholesale fuel revenues increased 16.1 percent year-over-year to $505.0 million.? Adjusted EBITDA further adjusts EBITDA by excluding non-cash stock-based compensation expense and certain other operating expenses that are reflected in our net income that we do not believe are indicative of our ongoing core operations, such as significant non-recurring transaction expenses and the gain or loss on disposal of assets and impairment charges.? Adjusted EBITDAR adds back rent to Adjusted EBITDA.? KwaZulu-Natal Guide | South Africa Travel | Rough Guides

KwaZulu-Natal Guide | South Africa Travel | Rough Guides

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa's most African province, has everything the continent is known for - beaches, wildlife, mountains and accessible ethnic culture. South Africans are well acquainted with KwaZulu-Natal's attractions; it's the leading province for domestic tourism, although foreign visitors haven't quite cottoned on to the incredible amount packed into this compact and beautiful region. The city of Durban is the industrial hub of the province and the country's principal harbour. British in origin, it has a heady mixture of cultural flavours deriving from its Zulu, Indian and white communities. You'll find palm trees fanning Victorian buildings, African squatters living precariously under truncated flyovers, high-rise offices towering over temples and curry houses, overdeveloped beachfronts, and everywhere an irrepressible fecundity.

To the north and south of Durban lie Africa's most developed beaches, known as the North and South coasts: stretching along the shore from the Eastern Cape border in the south to the Tugela River in the north, this 250km ribbon of holiday homes is South Africa's busiest and least enticing coastal strip. However, north of the Tugela River you'll find some of the most pristine shores in the country. Here, along the Elephant Coast, a patchwork of wetlands, freshwater lakes, wilderness and Zulu villages meets the sea at a virtually seamless stretch of sand that begins at the St Lucia Estuary and slips across the Mozambique border at Kosi Bay. Apart from southern Lake St Lucia, which is fairly developed in a low-key fashion, the Elephant Coast is one of the most isolated regions in the country, rewarding visitors with South Africa's best snorkelling and scuba diving along the coral reefs off Sodwana Bay.

KwaZulu-Natal's marine life is matched on land by its game reserves, some of which are beaten only by the Kruger National Park, and easily surpass the latter as the best place in the continent to see both black and white De Groote Dam rhinos. Concentrated in the north, the reserves tend to be compact and feature some of the most stylish game-lodge accommodation in the country. Most famous and largest of the reserves is the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, trampled by a respectable cross section of wildlife that includes all of the Big Five.

Since the nineteenth century, when missionaries were homing in on the region, the Zulus have captured the popular imagination of the West and remain one of the province's major draws for tourists. You'll find constant reminders of the old Zulu kingdom and its founder Shaka, including an excellent reconstruction of the beehive-hutted capital at Ondini and the more touristy Shakaland near Eshowe. The interior north of the Tugela River was the heartland of the Zulu kingdom and witnessed gruesome battles between Boers and Zulus, British and Zulus, and finally Boers and British. Today, the area can be explored through Battlefield tours, a memorable way of taking in some of South Africa's most turbulent history.

From the Midlands, South Africa's highest peaks sweep west into the soaring Ukhahlamba Drakensberg range, protected by a chain of KZN Wildlife reserves. The area's restcamps are ideal bases for walking in the mountains or heading out for ambitious hikes; with relatively little effort, you can experience crystal rivers tumbling into marbled rock pools, awe-inspiring peaks and rock faces enriched by ancient San paintings.

KwaZulu-Natal experiences considerable variations in climate, from the occasional heavy winter snowstorms of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg to the mellow, sunny days and pleasant sea temperatures a couple of hundred kilometres away along the subtropical coastline, which offers a temperate climate year-round. This makes the region a popular winter getaway, but in midsummer the low-lying areas, including Durban, the coastal belt and the game reserves, can be uncomfortably humid.

Brief history
Despite their defeats in battles with the Boers and the British during the nineteenth century, the Zulus have remained an active force in South African politics and are particularly strong in KwaZulu-Natal. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), formed in 1975 by former ANC Youth League member Mangosuthu Buthelezi and currently the country's fourth-largest political party, has long been associated with Zulu nationalism and draws most of its support from Zulu-speaking people. The IFP and ANC were originally allies in the fight against apartheid, but the IFP's ardent nationalism soon proved to be a major hassle for the ANC, who responded with attacks on opposing IFP members. A bitter and violent conflict between the two parties ensued during the 1980s and 1990s, which, according to some, claimed around twenty thousand lives. Although the fighting is now restricted to isolated - and increasingly rare - incidents, the political rivalry continues. It is the ANC, however, which has gained the upper hand in KwaZulu-Natal and is currently in control of the provincial legislature. The South African president, Jacob Zuma, a Zulu from KwaZulu-Natal, has played an important role in trying to end the violence between the ANC and IFP. He often makes speeches in Zulu, and has retained strong support among his people despite his controversial political career.

The structural parts of a fixed-wing aircraft are called the airframe. The Boeing 747 was the world's biggest passenger aircraft from 1970 until it was surpassed by the Airbus A380 in 2005.
A flying wing is a tailless aircraft which has no definite fuselage, with most of the crew, payload and equipment being housed inside the main wing structure.[25]
Blended wing body aircraft have a flattened and airfoil shaped body, which produces most of the lift to keep itself aloft, and distinct and separate wing structures, though the wings are smoothly blended in with the body.
The flying wing configuration was studied extensively in the 1930s and 1940s, notably by Jack Northrop and Cheston L. Once released from the tow near the target, they landed as close to the target as possible. Snow kiting has also become popular.

Kites were used approximately 2,800 years ago in China, where materials ideal for kite building were readily available. Unpowered fixed-wing aircraft, including free-flying gliders of various kinds and tethered kites, can use moving air to gain height.
Gliders and sailplanes that are used for the sport of gliding have high aerodynamic efficiency. Due to the practical need for a deep wing, the flying wing concept is most practical for designs in the slow-to-medium speed range, and there has been continual interest in using it as a tactical airlifter design.

The horizontal stabilizer is used to stabilise the plane's pitch (tilt up or down) and mounts the elevators which provide pitch control.Landing gear, a set of wheels, skids, or floats that support the plane while it is on the surface. However, modern computer-controlled fly-by-wire systems allowed for many of the aerodynamic drawbacks of the flying wing to be minimised, making for an efficient and stable long-range bomber.

Early aeroplane engines had little power and light weight was very important. Montgomery made a controlled flight in a glider.[citation needed] Other aviators who made similar flights at that time were Otto Lilienthal, Percy Pilcher, and Octave Chanute.
A paper plane is a toy aircraft (usually a glider) made out of paper or paperboard.
Kites are mostly flown for recreational purposes, but have many other uses. After launch, further energy is obtained through the skillful exploitation of rising air in the atmosphere. The actual direction the plane is flying towards is affected by the wind conditions. An attitude indicator, sometimes called an artificial horizon, which indicates the exact orientation of the plane about its pitch and roll axes.A vertical speed indicator, which shows the rate at which the plane is climbing or descending.A turn coordinator, or turn and bank indicator which helps the pilot maintain the plane in a coordinated attitude while turning.
A glider is a heavier-than-air craft that is supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of the air against its lifting surfaces, and whose free flight does not depend on an engine. When the available engine power increased during the 1920s and 1930s and bracing was no longer needed, the unbraced or cantilever monoplane became the most common form of powered type.

In the 1890s, Lawrence Hargrave conducted research on wing structures and developed a box kite that lifted the weight of a man. Then as speeds increased more and more parts became metal until by the end of WWII all-metal aircraft were common. When the available engine power increased during the 1920s and 1930s, wings could be made heavy and strong enough that bracing was not needed any more. Retrieved 26 July 2009. The flight tests continue until the aircraft has fulfilled all the requirements. Some free-flying types use an adapted aerofoil that is stable, or other ingenious mechanisms including, most recently, electronic artificial stability.
Quieter planes are becoming more and more needed due to the increase in air traffic, particularly over urban areas, as aircraft noise pollution is a major concern.

After approval by inspectors, the plane is put through a series of flight tests to assure that all systems are working correctly and that the plane handles properly. So until the 1930s most wings were too light weight to have enough strength and external bracing struts and wires were added. By the time of the Korean War, transport aircraft had also become larger and more efficient so that even light tanks could be dropped by parachute, causing gliders to fall out of favor.

Lifting body[edit]The Martin Aircraft Company X-24 was built as part of a 1963 to 1975 experimental US military program.Main article: Lifting body

In 1906, Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos Dumont designed, built and piloted an aircraft that set the first world record recognized by the A?ro-Club de France by flying the 14 bis 220 metres (720 ft) in less than 22 seconds.[15] The flight was certified by the FAI.[16] This was the first controlled flight, to be officially recognised, by a plane able to take off under its own power alone without any auxiliary machine such as a catapult.
A Motor glider does have an engine for extending its performance and some have engines powerful enough to take off, but the engine is not used in normal flight.
A paraglider is a lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure.[22] The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a hollow fabric wing whose shape is formed by its suspension lines, the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing and the aerodynamic forces of the air flowing over the outside. A class of ultralight sailplanes, including some known as microlift gliders and some as 'airchairs', has been defined by the FAI based on a maximum weight. The parts present can vary according to the aircraft's type and purpose. When the aircraft travels forwards, air flows over the wings which are shaped to create lift.

As is the case with planes, there are a wide variety of glider types differing in the construction of their wings, aerodynamic efficiency, location of the pilot and controls. First the construction company uses drawings and equations, simulations, wind tunnel tests and experience to predict the behavior of the aircraft. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. In 1894, his machine was tested with overhead rails to prevent it from rising. His box kite designs were widely adopted. Unmanned gliders[edit]

Even after the development of powered aircraft, gliders continued to be used for aviation research. They were an essential component of the military strategies of the period, such as the German Blitzkrieg or the American and Japanese aircraft carrier campaigns of the Pacific.
In October 1947, the Bell X-1 was the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound.[citation needed]

The control system may allow full or partial automation of flight, such as an autopilot, a wing leveler, or a flight management system. Paragliding: The Complete Guide. Stories of kites were brought to Europe by Marco Polo towards the end of the 13th century, and kites were brought back by sailors from Japan and Malaysia in the 16th and 17th centuries.[3] Although they were initially regarded as mere curiosities, by the 18th and 19th centuries kites were being used as vehicles for scientific research.[3]

Kites and some light weight gliders and aeroplanes have flexible wing surfaces which are stretched across a frame and made rigid by the lift forces exerted by the airflow over them. The broad spectrum of uses for planes includes recreation, transportation of goods and people, military, and research.
When complete, a plane is rigorously inspected to search for imperfections and defects. Pilots have the ability to soar for hours, gain thousands of metres of altitude in thermal updrafts, perform aerobatics, and glide cross-country for hundreds of kilometres.
Design and manufacture[edit]Main article: Aerospace manufacturerThis section needs additional citations for verification. Stealth technology relies on shapes which only reflect radar waves in certain directions, thus making the aircraft hard to detect unless the radar receiver is at a specific position relative to the aircraft - a position that changes continuously as the aircraft moves. In 1943 the first operational jet fighter, the Messerschmitt Me 262, went into service with the German Luftwaffe and later in the war the British Gloster Meteor entered service but never saw action.

Cultural uses[edit]
Lifting bodies were a major area of research in the 1960s and 1970s as a means to build a small and lightweight manned spacecraft. Captive balloons may be more convenient for such experiments, because kite-carried antennas require a lot of wind, which may be not always possible with heavy equipment and a ground conductor.

A floatplane is similar in overall design to a land-based aeroplane, except that the wheels at the base of the undercarriage are replaced by floats, allowing the craft to operate from water rather than from dry land.A flying boat is a seaplane with a watertight hull forming its fuselage. Bleriot XI, The Story of a Classic Aircraft. Although he also developed a type of rotary aircraft engine, he did not create and fly a powered fixed-wing aircraft.[12]

The wing planform is the shape when seen from above. The advantage over paratroopers were that heavy equipment could be landed and that the troops were quickly assembled rather than being dispersed over a drop zone. This deflection also generates horizontal drag in the direction of the wind. Alexander Graham Bell experimented with very large man-lifting kites, as did the Wright brothers and Lawrence Hargrave. This approach eventually led to the Northrop B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. Retrieved 20 June 2010.

Research gliders[edit]
Paraglider[edit]
A craft may have two pilots' seats with dual controls, allowing two pilots to take turns. A yoke resembles a steering wheel, and a control stick is a joystick. Early types were usually made of wood with fabric wing surfaces, When engines became available for powered flight around a hundred years ago, their mounts were made of metal. These are often connected to small airfoils on the trail edge of the control surfaces called 'trim tabs'. Dunne sometimes flew an aircraft as a kite in order to develop it and confirm its flight characteristics, before adding an engine and flight controls, and flying it as an aeroplane.

Kites are controlled by wires running down to the ground. Efficient foil-type kites such as power kites can also be used to sail upwind under the same principles as used by other sailing craft, provided that lateral forces on the ground or in the water are redirected as with the keels, center boards, wheels and ice blades of traditional sailing craft. Cayley established the modern configuration of an aeroplane as a fixed-wing flying machine with separate systems for lift, propulsion, and control as early as 1799." ^ "Cayley, Sir George: Encyclopaedia Britannica 2007." Upon passing these tests, the plane is ready to receive the "final touchups" (internal configuration, painting, etc.), and is then ready for the customer.

Before and during the war, both British and German designers were developing jet engines to power aeroplanes. "Hargrave, Lawrence (1850-1915)". Also, early aerofoil sections were very thin, and could not have strong frame installed within. This gave rise to the popular sport of gliding.

A lifting body is a configuration in which the body itself produces lift. Typically each wire acts as a tether to the part of the kite it is attached to.

The gliders were treated as disposable leading to construction from common and inexpensive materials such as wood, though a few were retrieved and re-used. Some GEVs are able to fly higher out of ground effect (OGE) when required - these are classed as powered fixed-wing aircraft.[19]
Hang glider[edit]Hang gliding
Initial research into many types of fixed-wing craft, including flying wings and lifting bodies was also carried out using unpowered prototypes.
A fixed-wing aircraft is an aircraft capable of flight using wings that generate lift caused by the vehicle's forward airspeed and the shape of the wings. An unmanned aircraft has no pilot but is controlled remotely or via means such as gyroscopes or other forms of autonomous control.

Some of the earliest recorded attempts with gliders were those by the 9th-century poet Abbas Ibn Firnas and the 11th-century monk Eilmer of Malmesbury; both experiments injured their pilots.[8]
Most fixed-wing aircraft are flown by a pilot on board the aircraft, but some are designed to be remotely or computer-controlled.

Whereas a flying wing seeks to maximize cruise efficiency at subsonic speeds by eliminating non-lifting surfaces, lifting bodies generally minimize the drag and structure of a wing for subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flight, or, spacecraft re-entry. Then, the governing public agency of aviation of the country authorises the company to begin production.

The wings of a fixed-wing aircraft are not necessarily rigid; kites, hang-gliders, variable-sweep wing aircraft and aeroplanes using wing-warping are all fixed-wing aircraft.
An aeroplane (also known as an airplane or simply a plane) is a powered fixed-wing aircraft that is propelled forward by thrust from a jet engine or propeller. The craft was uncontrollable, which Maxim, it is presumed, realized, because he subsequently abandoned work on it.[13]

Glide bombs are bombs with aerodynamic surfaces to allow a gliding flightpath rather than a ballistic one. Hang gliders most often have flexible wings given shape by a frame, though some have rigid wings. Retrieved 5 August 2008. The variable-sweep wing transforms between an efficient straight configuration for takeoff and landing, to a low-drag swept configuration for high-speed flight. Some authors hold that leaf kites were being flown much earlier in what is now Indonesia, based on their interpretation of cave paintings on Muna Island off Sulawesi.[1] By at least 549 AD paper kites were being flown, as it was recorded in that year a paper kite was used as a message for a rescue mission.[2] Ancient and medieval Chinese sources list other uses of kites for measuring distances, testing the wind, lifting men, signaling, and communication for military operations.[2]

The parts are sent to the main plant of the plane company, where the production line is located. Some gliders, known as motor gliders, are designed for unpowered flight, but can deploy piston, rotary, jet or electric engines.[21] Gliders are classified by the FAI for competitions into glider competition classes mainly on the basis of span and flaps.

Whether flexible or rigid, most wings, have a strong frame to give them their shape and to transfer lift from the wing surface to the rest of the aircraft. 124-125^ FAI News: 100 Years Ago, the Dream of Icarus Became Reality posted 17 December 2003. Designs range from simple glider aircraft to accurate scale models, some of which can be very large.

Gliders and aeroplanes have more complex control systems, especially if they are piloted.

Around 400 BC in Greece, Archytas was reputed to have designed and built the first artificial, self-propelled flying device, a bird-shaped model propelled by a jet of what was probably steam, said to have flown some 200 m (660 ft).[4][5] This machine may have been suspended for its flight.[6][7]
Aircraft controls[edit]
Gliders are mainly used for recreation, but have also been used for other purposes such as aerodynamics research, warfare and recovering spacecraft.
A ground effect vehicle (GEV) is an aircraft that attains level flight near the surface of the earth, making use of the ground effect - an aerodynamic interaction between the wings and the earth's surface. Energykitesystems.net. In this case the aerodynamic advantages of the flying wing are not the primary needs. A given wing plane may be full-span or divided by a central fuselage into port (left) and starboard (right) wings. Rolling the plane is accomplished by turning the yoke in the direction of the desired roll, or by tilting the control stick in that direction.Rudder pedals control rotation of the plane about the yaw axis. All of these flight regimes pose challenges for proper flight stability.
Kite festivals are a popular form of entertainment throughout the world. These allowed longer glides to the next source of 'lift', and so increase their chances of flying long distances. Other homebuilt aircraft can be assembled using pre-manufactured kits of parts that can be assembled into a basic plane and must then be completed by the builder.

Model glider aircraft are models of aircraft using lightweight materials such as polystyrene and balsa wood. G-Kites. In the case of large planes, production lines dedicated to the assembly of certain parts of the plane can exist, especially the wings and the fuselage.
There are few companies that produce planes on a large scale. Early pioneers such as the Wright Brothers and J.W. Some general interest continued until the early 1950s but designs did not necessarily offer a great advantage in range and presented a number of technical problems, leading to the adoption of "conventional" solutions like the Convair B-36 and the B-52 Stratofortress. Some toys (e.g. The fin stabilises the plane's yaw (turn left or right) and mounts the rudder which controls its rotation along that axis.A horizontal stabiliser, usually mounted at the tail near the vertical stabilizer. Airframe[edit]
A kite is an aircraft tethered to a fixed point so that the wind blows over its wings.[23]Lift is generated when air flows over the kite's wing, producing low pressure above the wing and high pressure below it, and deflecting the airflow downwards. The highest lift-to-drag ratio is 70:1, though 50:1 is more common. Smithsonian Institution Press, 1988. To minimise drag, these types have a streamlined fuselage and long narrow wings having a high aspect ratio. Occasionally even more wings have been used, with the three-winged triplane achieving some fame in WWI. The pilot presses on the right rudder pedal to make the plane yaw to the right, and pushes on the left pedal to make it yaw to the left. Although this application was abandoned, publicity inspired hobbyists to adapt the flexible wing airfoil for modern hang gliders.

Sir Hiram Maxim built a craft that weighed 3.5 tons, with a 110-foot (34-meter) wingspan that was powered by two 360-horsepower (270-kW) steam engines driving two propellers. Ultralight gliders have performance similar to hang gliders, but offer some additional crash safety as the pilot can be strapped in an upright seat within a deformable structure. This enables the carrying aircraft to attack a heavily defended target from a distance.
In 1948-49, aircraft transported supplies during the Berlin Blockade. This is often used for training or for longer flights.

Notes[edit]In 1903, when the Wright brothers used the word "aeroplane," it meant wing, not the whole aircraft. Perhaps the most familiar type is the toy paper plane.
In 1799, Sir George Cayley set forth the concept of the modern aeroplane as a fixed-wing flying machine with separate systems for lift, propulsion, and control.[9][10] Cayley was building and flying models of fixed-wing aircraft as early as 1803, and he built a successful passenger-carrying glider in 1853.[11] In 1856, Frenchman Jean-Marie Le Bris made the first powered flight, by having his glider "L'Albatros artificiel" pulled by a horse on a beach.[citation needed] In 1883, the American John J. Seaplane[edit]Main article: Seaplane

A hang glider is a glider aircraft in which the pilot is ensconced in a harness suspended from the airframe, and exercises control by shifting body weight in opposition to a control frame. The rudder is used mainly to balance the plane in turns, or to compensate for winds or other effects that tend to turn the plane about the yaw axis.On powered types, an engine stop control ("fuel cutoff", for example) and, usually, a Throttle or thrust lever and other controls, such as a fuel-mixture control (to compensate for air density changes with altitude change).

The wings of a fixed-wing aircraft are static planes extending either side of the aircraft. This is so common that it is known as the conventional layout. As pilots began to understand how to use rising air, sailplane gliders were developed with a high lift-to-drag ratio. Aviation Supplies & Academics, 1997. Automata.co.uk.^ White, Lynn. What Lenovo buying Motorola means for your next smartphone

Instant presence.

"Google creates a much simplified business environment by divesting itself of Motorola Mobility," said Ian Fogg, head of Mobile at analyst IHS Technology.
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/what-lenovo-buying-motorola-means-for-your-next-smartphone-1220081

Go back to what you know
Bigger is better... In fact, Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing confirmed that consumers 'can expect it with the Motorola brand'.

"Like Apple, Nokia, and Palm before it, Google has failed to balance the competing business demands of distributing operating systems while also making hardware. Once you've got your head around the fact Google is dropping something it paid ?8 billion ($12.5bn) for in 2012, there's a bigger issue here: your next phone is probably going to be more expensive.

"It removes the channel conflict with other Android smartphone makers because Google will no longer have its own competing smartphone hardware division. Where those companies chose to downplay their OS licensing business in favour of their own hardware play, Google did the opposite and sacrificed Motorola."
So now Lenovo, a successful brand in the PC space, is going to open both barrels on the smartphone world. right?
While it was always maintained that Motorola was able to reach that cost level organically, it seems impossible that the magical price was possible without some help from the Big G, especially given the above average specs on offer.

You might have heard - Google has sold Motorola to Lenovo.

And with Google admitting it couldn't go 'all-in' on Motorola, it will inevitably focus on making the Android platform a sleeker environment and working with manufacturers to bring the 'vanilla' experience to the fore with a greater number of 'Play Edition' devices offering the stripped back OS.
Related storiesLenovo won't rip up Motorola roadmap - new Moto X on the horizonGoogle dumping Motorola isn't a disaster: it's a rebootGoogle admits it couldn't go 'all-in' on Moto, says firm is better off with Lenovo

But now Motorola has gone, this could actually be great news for Android fans. This is a Chinese brand that's constantly in the top three vendors in its home country, a region that's one of the fastest growing in the smartphone world.
It was supposed to buy BlackBerry back in 2013, but that was apparently blocked by a suspicious Canadian government worried about giving such a national treasure to an outside firm.
It was faced with a choice: spend billions on marketing and product research and try to force its way into both new and saturated markets - or just trot in and shower some cash on one of the incumbents. It was widely expected that, if the Nexus name was retired as reported, Google would pump more effort into its 'halo' smartphone brand.

Lenovo swooping in and gathering up Motorola isn't a big shock, despite the surprise at the deal happening so fast. Google's place in the smartphone arena http://www.muto.co.za riled a lot of its manufacturing customers - and it's no surprise that Samsung has agreed to relax its relentless assault on Google's apps by dropping the effort into some of its own.

But the better news? Android is going to evolve into something a lot more useful.

What Lenovo buying Motorola means for your next smartphone | News | TechRadar
Want to know more about the Moto G? It's the best budget handset around
But without Google's magic supply of money, we aren't going to be seeing devices like the ultra-cheap Moto G any time soon..

With Google no longer a threat to manufacturers, the likes of HTC, Sony and Samsung will likely be more willing to promote Google's suite of movie, music and gaming options which will in turn make Android a more holistic place, rather than a dripping, disparate beast that is light years away from the sheen of Apple's iTunes store.
That means the next budget Motorola handset is unlikely to be as cheap, so competitors - currently panicking about how to rival something that's a fifth of the cost of top-end devices - can relax without being castigated for not being as cheap as 'that Motorola phone'.
In short: while Google's presence as a hardware manufacturer was a great thing if you were after a great handset at a low price, ditching Motorola now means it can get back to making Android a great OS - and increased innovation and competition can only equal even better phones.

Google has been doing some sterling work in the tablet as well as high- and low-end smartphone markets, driving down the cost with the Nexus range and making http://www.muto.co.za/portfolio.php Motorola more competitive.

Lenovo has traditionally played in the larger-screen device arena, which means that a Motorola phablet is likely to be given some attention rather than continuing with the low-cost smaller handset range
